Importance of Meditation -Why our Ancestors performs Meditation?
THE POWER OF MEDITATION
Meditation
has been practiced in the world since 1500 BC. The earliest records of
meditation (Dhyana) come from the Hindu traditions of Vedantism. Meditation has
a great impact on our ancestors. Practicing Meditation can reduce mental stress,
anxiety, depression, etc. It helps to increase concentration, peace of mind,
attention, well-being and other psychological elements.
“Meditation
is a simple technique to achieve attention, awareness and emotionally calm and
stable state of mind by various methods like focusing on an object, thought or
repetition of holy name or mantra.”
Meditation
is performed by almost each and every successful person. Meditation clarifies
various aspects that are running into our mind. We find the solution of many
problems while meditation. Achievement of goals requires focus, efforts,
smart-work, determination and patience which are achieved by performing
meditation. Patnajali, the original teacher of yoga said, “Meditation is
uninterrupted thinking of one’s thought.” Spiritual teachers from different
religious traditions, philosophical orientations and cultures prescribe
different meditation techniques. There are hundreds of specific meditations.
Swami
Vivekananda said, “Meditation is the focusing of mind on some object. If the
mind acquires concentration on one object, it can concentrate on any object
whatsoever.” One general type of meditation is to witness the workings of the
mind without trying to suppress or direct thoughts that arise. Witnessing one’s
thoughts, one feels disidentified with the mind and identified with the witness
self, the spiritual reality. Sri Ramakrishna used to say that the mind is like
a naughty child, if you look at its intensity, it feels shy, as it were and
begins to behave. Another type of meditation is to think excellent, innovative
thoughts. The mind has to be made steady by two means; First, go to a quiet
place, make the mind free from waves and meditate. Second, develop the mind by
thinking excellent thoughts. The mind will act exactly how you feed it. The
food for the mind is meditation.
Your mind must be capable to
discriminate between the real and the unreal. Youth, beauty, wealth, prestige
never lost. The Holy Mother said: “Discriminate between the real and the unreal.
Whenever you find the mind drawn to any object, think of it and try to draw the
mind back to the thought of God.”
