Why most of the Students are Depressed ?
Depression is a state of mind
in which the person experience extreme sadness and loss of interest in almost
everything. This illness negatively affects your feelings and thinking. It can
lead to a variety of mental and physical problems and can decrease your
productivity at work and at home. Depression is a common mental disorder.
Globally, more than 322 million people of all ages are suffering from
depression. Depression affects an estimated one in 15 adults (6.7%) in any
given year. And one in 6 people will experience depression at some time in
their life. Depression is likely to be caused in adulthood.
Every hour, a student in
India takes his own life. About 12% of Indian students suffers from different
mental disorders. 20% of them show symptoms of mental disorders out of which,
2.5% have serious issues like bipolar disorder or autism. Still a large number
of people deny that these minors are suffering from depression. Sadly
depression has become one of the leading cause in India. Mental issues are also
caused because of environmental challenges like body shaming, emotional issues,
family/financial issues, hormonal changes, low self-esteem, sexual or religious
discrimination and even substance addiction.
Depression and Sadness are
not the same
The death of loved one, not
passed in an exam, loss of job are difficult experiences for sure but it is
normal to feel sad for these things. Depression may involve intense mental
pressure leading to sadness and doing unusual activities. Depression leads to
the feelings of worthlessness and self-loathing. Sadness remain for a short
time and causes no harm to your mental health while depression does.
Symptoms of Depression
1. Feeling sad all the time.
2. Loss of interest in almost everything.
3. Not enjoying your previous hobbies.
4. Changes in appetite –weight loss or weight gain
suddenly in a span of 3-4 months unrelated to dieting.
5. Trouble sleeping or sleeping too much.
6. Difficulty in concentration and making decisions.
7. Thoughts of death or suicide.
Causes of Depression in
Students
1} Parental Pressure
Everyone is aware of the
behavior of most of the Indian parents. Parents wish and sometime force their
off-springs to live out their dreams. There is a lot of stress on the student
from their parents. Parents force their child to perform well in exams. This
stress gets over the student and it affects the child’s mental stress. Parents
should not force their child to fulfill their own dreams.
2} Relationships
Relationships are also an integral part of
student’s life. In many cases, a break-up is a reason behind feeling depressed.
Some youngsters just can’t cope up with this issues and ends their life.
Breakups lead to feelings such as trouble sleeping, negative emotional thoughts
and these thoughts often get out of control.
3} Exam Pressure
Exams are an important part
of student’s life. The stress of exams on the student sometimes leads to
serious mental problems. Less marks in exam or failing in exams make students
mentally unstable. This leads to self-doubt and feelings of worthlessness. This
makes a student feels dull.
4} Addiction
It is also important to note
that depressed students are more likely to develop problems like drugs and
alcohol. This leads them in worse condition than ever. Their life becomes hell.
As these drugs directly affects on the nervous system of body, they do not
recognize what they are in and their life becomes worse than ever.
Treatment of Depression in
Students
School and college life are
an important part of one’s educational journey. At the same time, it is also a
stressful environment for most of the young people. Therefore, it is an
important job of family, friends and faculty to get involved the moment they
suspect any student suffering from depression. The best treatment for students
suffering from depression are a mix of talk therapies and antidepressant
medications. Depressed students could also benefit by doing exercise regularly.
Proper diet and listening to music can help a lot. Parents should support their
child. It’s time Indian parents realize how fragile mental health is! If the
condition of student is getting worse then we must consult to a physiatrist. If
we don’t take necessary action at right time then the condition can become
worse. Therefore we must not avoid this and take actions immediately.
